History

Playford Tennis Club has a rich and vibrant history as old as Elizabeth itself.

The Elizabeth Methodist Tennis Club built the first tennis courts in the Elizabeth area in 1956 alongside the church.  The Elizabeth Tennis Club built the first public tennis courts in 1958.  Both of these clubs along with the Elizabeth-Salisbury & Districts Tennis Association amalgamated to form The Grove Tennis Club in 2009. The club and association called the Bicentennial Tennis Centre (located behind the Lyell McEwin Hospital) home for nearly 30 years.

With the Lyell McEwin Hospital precinct needing additional room to move, the club eventually moved into the state of the art, $8.9 million dollar Playford City Tennis Centre, built by the City of Playford in 2017.  The club changed it’s name to Playford Tennis club in 2018 to more closely align with its new home.

Playford Tennis Club has been running a vibrant Night Tennis Competition since 1981.  The original reason for starting the night competition was to avoid the extreme heat of the hot summer afternoons that year.  Over the years, the competition gradually changed to a more social competition, where all abilities are catered for in a fun and friendly tennis environment.
